Definition of Community

Community is a loosely defined term used to refer to a group of individuals who share a common environment. The most common use of the word community is used to refer to the geographical area in which one lives. However, communities are not only based on geographical areas but can also be based on interests, religion, business, culture, values and much more. Recently, there has even been an overwhelming interest in virtual and online communities where websites take the place as the common environment. Nonetheless, all communities share common goals, values and norms within themselves, which define and hold the group together. Within Communities there are common agreements such as laws and regulations that keep societies together and organized. Furthermore, they require social interaction between members to exist, which creates a bonding and recognition between members. Communities and are essentially the building blocks of a society, as a society is made up of the many communities that it contains.
